Navy Grog is a classic tiki cocktail that was invented by Don the Beachcomber.  Don the Beachcomber is credited by some to have been the inventor of the Tiki bar.  If not the first he was definitely one of the first.  I don’t like to get into these debates though. I just like enjoying a tiki drink and escaping somewhere tropical for a few hours or even minutes.

To make Navy Grog put some ice in your glass.  Then, add:

  • 1/2 oz Light Rum
  • 1/2 oz Gold Rum
  • 1/2 oz Dark Rum
  • 1/2 oz Grand Marnier
  • 1 oz Grapefruit Juice
  • 1 oz Orange Juice
  • 1 oz Pineapple Juice

Shake the ingredients in your cocktail shaker to combine. Then, pour into a Collins glass if you have one. Otherwise, any glass will do.

This little drink has a lot going on. When you bring the glass to your lips to take your first sip your noise is hit with a bouquet of citrus that immediately transports you to a citrus grove.  You know you are in for a treat before you even taste this cocktail.  As you take your first taste the refreshing flavors of orange, grapefruit, and pineapple immediately greet you.  They are accompanied by the dark rum with it’s oaky flavors.  Since, the dark rum is only one of three rums it isn’t too overpowering. The orange brandy like flavor of the Grand Marnier also rounds out the many flavors.  This drink is really easy to make, and packs a lot of impressive flavor.

What do you think of Navy Grog?  Do you have a favorite tiki drink you’d like to share?  Let me know here if you do.

Mahalo!
