How to make Navy Grog

Navy Grog is a classic tiki cocktail that was invented by Don the Beachcomber.  Don the Beachcomber is credited by some to have been the inventor of the Tiki bar.  If not the first he was definitely one of the first.  I don’t like to get into these debates though. I just like enjoying a tiki drink and escaping somewhere tropical for a few hours or even minutes.

To make Navy Grog put some ice in your glass.  Then, add:

  • 1/2 oz Light Rum
  • 1/2 oz Gold Rum
  • 1/2 oz Dark Rum
  • 1/2 oz Grand Marnier
  • 1 oz Grapefruit Juice
  • 1 oz Orange Juice
  • 1 oz Pineapple Juice

Shake the ingredients in your cocktail shaker to combine. Then, pour into a Collins glass if you have one. Otherwise, any glass will do.

This little drink has a lot going on. When you bring the glass to your lips to take your first sip your noise is hit with a bouquet of citrus that immediately transports you to a citrus grove.  You know you are in for a treat before you even taste this cocktail.  As you take your first taste the refreshing flavors of orange, grapefruit, and pineapple immediately greet you.  They are accompanied by the dark rum with it’s oaky flavors.  Since, the dark rum is only one of three rums it isn’t too overpowering. The orange brandy like flavor of the Grand Marnier also rounds out the many flavors.  This drink is really easy to make, and packs a lot of impressive flavor.

What do you think of Navy Grog?  Do you have a favorite tiki drink you’d like to share?  Let me know here if you do.

How to Make a Gilligan’s Island

The Gilligan’s Island is named after the popular 1960s television show with the same name.  This is a great Tiki style cocktail for those who don’t like to drink rum.  I know not drinking rum may sound crazy, but these type of people do exist.  To make a Gilligan’s Island fill your glass with Ice.  Then add:

1 oz Vodka

1 oz Peach Schnapps

3 oz Orange Juice

3 oz Cranberry Juice

Shake the drink in your cocktail shaker, pour back into the glass and enjoy!

How to Make a Suffering Bastard

Happy Tiki Tuesday!  This week for Tiki Tuesday we’ll be making a Suffering Bastard.  The Suffering Bastard was invented at the Shepard Hotel in Cairo, Egypt and is a classic Tiki cocktail.

To make a Suffering Bastard add some ice to your cocktail shaker then add:

  • 1 oz Gin
  • 1 oz Bourbon
  • 1 oz Lime Juice
  • Dash of Bitters

Shake well.  I always like to shake my drinks until the shaker gets really cold and sometimes even frosty. Then, pour the drink into a highball glass, or whatever you have.  The drink tastes the same in any glass.  Top it off with 4 oz of ginger beer or ginger ale.  Stir to mix in the ginger beer.  You can garnish it wish an orange slice.

The gin and bourbon really blend in nicely with the combination of the lime juice, ginger beer, and bitters.  Even if you aren’t a gin or bourbon fan give this one a try.  It blends well and the ginger tastes great!

Enjoy!

Introducting Mai Tai Monday

The Mai Tai is the first thing many people think of when they think tiki drinks, and there are as many Mai
Tai recipes in the world as there are Mai Tai drinkers.  So every Monday I want to explore a different Mai Tai recipe.  Besides, what is a better way to relax after a long Monday than having a great Mai Tai?

This week’s Mai Tai I found on drinkandfoodonline.com where they showcased the Mai Tai recipe from The Bird All-American Bar and Grill in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.  Check it out:

Fill a glass with Ice

Add:

  • 1 oz. Spiced Rum
  • 1 oz. Triple Sec
  • Splash of Lime Juice
  • Splash of Grenadine
  • Top with half Pineapple Juice and half OJ.

 Blend and serve!

So I put this Mai Tai recipe to the test.  It was actually pretty good.  It’s not what I think of as a traditional Mai Tai, but it was more like a tropical smoothie with rum.  It was really sweet. I’m a sweet drink fan, but I don’t think even I could do more than one of these, but it’s a fun way to start the night off.  It would also work great as a dessert drink.

How to Make a Morito Cocktail

The Morito is a twist on your traditional Mojito.  This recipe was given to to me by @cooklocally on Twitter.  What makes the Morito different from a traditional Mojito is that you use Lemon and Basil instead of Lime and Mint.  This is a crisp and refreshing drink great for a hot summer day.  If you find a Mojito too sweet give this one a try; It uses much less sugar. I think you’ll really like it.  To make a Morito add to a glass:

  • 1 Large Basil Leaf
  • 2 slices of Lemon
  • 1/2 tsp Sugar

Gently, muddle the ingredients to bring out the oils and juice from the Lemon and Basil. Be careful to not tear the Basil.

Then, add:

  • 1 oz Vodka
  • Ice
  • Top with Tonic

Pour the drink into a shaker and then back into the glass to mix it up. Enjoy!

When I first read this recipe I was a bit skeptical about how Basil would taste in a cocktail, but I was sure surprised.  The Lemon and Basil go really well together.  I’ll definitely be making this one on a regular basis.

Thanks, @cooklocally for the suggestion. If you have a drink suggestion for me let me know. I’m @LetsTiki on Twitter or email me using our Contact Us form.

How to Make a Chief Lapu Lapu

The Chief Lapu Lapu is a classic 1950s Tiki Cocktail.  Chief Lapu Lapu was a Filipino chief from the 1500s that was one of the first to resist Spanish colonization.  There are many variations of this delicious drink. Here is one common one that I’ve found on the Internet that I really enjoy.

To start off combine the following into a cocktail shaker with some ice:

1.5 oz Dark Jamaican Rum

1.5 oz Light Puerto Rican Rum

2 oz Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice

3 oz Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice

1 oz Simple Syrup

3/4 oz Passion Fruit Syrup

Shake well. I always like to shake mine until the outside of the shaker becomes cool to the touch and condensation starts to form.  By shaking the drink the ice melts a little and the recipe relies on that melting to dilute the strong flavors just a bit.

Pour the drink unstrained into a brandy snifter.   This drink is traditionally served in a brandy snifter, but if you don’t have one that’s all right. Any glass will do. Then, garnish with a lemon and/or orange peel. I just peel my lemon and orange with a regular vegetable peeler before I juice the fruit.  The peels add a great aroma and the oils in the peel add to the flavor.

No Worry Substitutions

Don’t worry if you don’t have these exact ingredients.  You don’t need to have a Jamaican Dark Rum. Any dark rum will do. The same goes for the light rum.  I order my Passion Fruit syrup online, but if you don’t have any grenadine will do.  Now, will the drink taste exactly the same with these substitutions? Probably not, but I’m sure it will still taste good.  The whole point of Tiki is to have a great drink, and have some fun. Break away from the daily grind and feel like you are a million miles away somewhere warm and tropical. So, enjoy!

How to Make a Molokai Mike

The Molokai Mike is a famous Trader Vic’s recipe, and looks pretty impressive because it is a layered drink.  Don’t let that scare you though it is really easy to make. You make the Molokai Mike in two parts first make the bottom layer and then the top layer.

To make a Molokai Mike combine in a blender:

1 oz Silver Rum

1 oz Orange Juice

1/2 oz Brandy

1/2 oz Orgeat Syrup

1/2 Cup Ice

Blend the first group of ingredients for just  a few seconds. Just enough so that is is blended, but still slushy. Pour the bottom layer into a glass.

Then, to make the top layer combine in a blender:

1 oz Gold Rum

1 oz Grenadine

1 Cup Crushed Ice

Blend the second group of ingredients very thoroughly so the mixture becomes thick. Then, slowly pour the top layer into the glass, and it will float on top of the bottom layer.  It’s really pretty easy. If I can do it anyone can.  You can garnish it with some fruit or an umbrella and serve.
